Islam for the Future
Getting young people to pay attention to much of anything these days is a task that our elders struggle with daily. Especially in the seemingly fading arenas of history and religion, the old is no longer paid as much attention as the new. In the fast-paced world that we live in it can be more than difficult to instill any sense of reverence or wonder for an ancient religion. But the Islamic Center of Zahra in Pleasanton is transforming what it means to be a young Muslim in California.
The Islamic Center of Zahra, named for the Prophet’s daughter, is not a mosque under Islamic law but a community center that serves a multiethnic group of Muslims from the Shia community. Originally based in Milpitas, they have been using their current building in Pleasanton for about 8 years. The center is an offshoot of the SABA Islamic Center in San Jose, which has been operational for over 20 years.
Beginning at a young age, students are enrolled in the center’s Jafria Islamic School where they learn the Islamic way of life. The Jafria Islamic School has been open since 2009 and serves the greater community of Pleasanton, Livermore, Tracy, San Ramon, Hercules, and Walnut Creek. Other weekly programs are conducted simultaneously to ensure that no one with a desire to learn is turned away.
While the majority of participants are Southeast Asian, the Islamic Center of Zahra recognizes the multicultural world we live in. The weekly sermon is given in English to maximize accessibility for all members but especially the younger ones who may or may not understand other languages. They hold regular interfaith activities with neighboring Hindu and Christian communities. This allows for the younger members to mingle with and begin to understand other faiths.
Within the context of Islam, the Islamic Center of Zahra functions as a platform for open discussion within the community on every topic from parenting to professional development. The goal of the adults of this organization of about 300 people is to rear the children in such a way that they can become exemplary members of the Muslim community and greater American society. But above all the center works to provide religious services to all Muslims and for the perpetuation and propagation of Islam.
